Geoff was born and raised in the English Lake District but has spent most of his adult life in the south west of England. Formerly a graphic designer and advertising art director Geoff is a self-taught fine artist working exclusively in oils. In 2005 he was elected a member of the Bath Society of Artists (BSA). Over recent years Geoff's main pre-occupation and dominant subject has been the human head, often viewed from dynamic angles and usually on a monumental scale. Always fascinated by the intimate view and conflicts of scale he places the viewer confrontationally close to the subject's face. Geoff attempts at all times to resist convention and constantly challenges himself to create intensity and dynamism in his work, this together with a recent return to the use of distortions (echoing his long-held interest in cinematic direction from the likes of Orson Welles and Alfred Hitchcock, the lighting techniques of Jack Cardiff, and painting influences such as Rembrandt, Freud, Spencer, Bacon and Close). This new direction allows him to explore the translation of subject from 'life' to the distorted subject on canvas resulting in an arresting and powerful image. Geoff exhibits mainly in London and the South West, and has paintings in private collections in the USA & UK . |
